Subject: Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) Collections 24-27
Change Request (OMB #1850-0582 v. 33)
IPEDS is a web-based data collection system designed to collect basic data from all postsecondary institutions in the United States and the other jurisdictions. The IPEDS data collection enables the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) to report on key dimensions of postsecondary education such as enrollments, degrees and other awards earned, tuition and fees, average net price, student financial aid, graduation rates, student outcomes, revenues and expenditures, faculty salaries, and staff employed. The IPEDS web-based data collection system was implemented in 2000-01. All Title IV institutions are required to respond to IPEDS (Section 490 of the Higher Education Amendments of 1992 [P.L. 102-325]).
The most recent request to collect IPEDS data was approved on August 5, 2024 and is due to expire on August 31, 2027. This non-substantive change requests asks to:
Remove sections across several surveys (i.e., 12-Month Enrollment, Admissions, Completions, Fall Enrollment, Graduation Rates, and Human Resources) that collected data on “another gender” and remove and/or revise accompanying instructions and FAQs (i.e., IPEDS Keyholder Handbook, IPEDS Glossary) that referenced those sections, and
Change all references of “gender” to “sex.” This change is to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order (EO) 14168 titled Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government issued January 20, 2025.
There are no expected changes to respondent burden or cost to the federal government.
If you have any questions about this requested change or require additional documentation of the proposed changes described above, please reach out to Matthew Soldner at matthew.soldner@ed.gov.
