National Recreational Boating Safety Survey

Who must comply?	There is no requirement to comply with this information collection request. Participation in the National Recreational Boating Safety Survey is voluntary.
What is this collection about?	The National Recreational Boating Safety Survey will produce a measure of boating exposure that is reliable at both national and state levels, and will measure incidence of participation, incidence of boat ownership, boating safety awareness and behavior as well as general boating statistics.
Where do I find the requirements for this information?	A National RBS program requirement as set forth in Title 46, United States Code, § 13101, is to “encourage greater State participation and uniformity in boating safety efforts, and particularly to permit the States to assume the greater share of boating safety education, assistance, and enforcement activities.” As coordinator of the National Recreational Boating Safety program, the Coast Guard provides support for safety initiatives in every jurisdiction (States and Territories) by making available timely, relevant information on boating activities that occur in each respective jurisdiction.
When must information be submitted to the Coast Guard?	This survey is conducted every 5 years. The gathering of boating data pertaining to the 2026 boating season for example should begin in the first quarter of 2026.
How is the information submitted?	The information will be submitted using three modes, which are the mail, the telephone, and the Internet. The majority of respondents will likely complete the survey online, but phone and mail options are available for those without the ability to complete the survey online or preference for a different mode.
What happens when complete information is received?	The CG will review and clean the information. Then the data will be analyzed, and summary boating statistics will be published at the National as well as at the state level.
