| What is this collection about? | The information is used by the Coast Guard (CG) to establish a vessel’s tonnage. Tonnage—needed before a vessel is documented as a vessel of the United States and to apply laws of the United States —is used to determine licensing, inspection, safety requirements, and operating fees. |

| How is the information submitted? | For an owner seeking measurement using the simplified measurement system, fill out the information on the Application for Simplified Measurement form (CG-5397) and submit it by mail, fax or electronically via e-mail to the National Vessel Documentation Center (NVDC).
